Full-time: Feyenoord 1-0 Man Utd
The Dutch league leaders get their Europa League campaign off to a fantastic start and consign Jose Mourinho’s side to a second defeat in a week following Saturday’s loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Mourinho’s face tells a thousand words as he trudges off the pitch.
It may not have appeared to be his top priority beforehand, but any loss stings when you’re Manchester United manager and he’ll perhaps be more concerned by the nature of his side’s performance.
In a word? Turgid.

There was no pace, no penetration and very little desire from the men in blue, who were second to every ball and did very little to trouble the hosts.
On the plus side, Smalling and co. will feel that they defended well for the most part and the goal was definitely offside.
But that doesn’t matter. All that matters is the scoreline and that reads Feyenoord 1-0 Man Utd.
Zlatan nearly saves the day!
The Swede takes a free-kick from 25 yards out and goes low and hard.
It’s right down Jones’ throat, but he has to hold onto the ball, with three United players rushing in for an easy tap in.
The Feyenoord keeper did well under pressure there.

A goal-line scramble there comes to nothing for United, after some great work by Ibra to win the ball in the box, pull it down on his foot and flick it to Smalling.
But the hosts smother the danger and eventually the chance falls to Young, who lashes at the ball and sends it about a mile over the bar.
Mourinho has made all his changes, so he can only watch on now as Feyenoord continue to frustrate his charges.
Just over five minutes plus stoppages for United to salvage this
You’d probably have to say that on the run of play, Feyenoord deserve to be ahead.

How do United respond?
Mourinho is up on the touchline passing on instructions to his team.
Kuyt stays down and wants a free-kick but finally Man Utd are playing with some urgency.
It looks like it will be all hands to the deck for the hosts now as they look to see out the final ten minutes.

Oh dear, that wasn’t on the cards!
Rojo is again found wanting as Feyenoord exploit space down the right and Jorgensen finds space in behind.
He was offside but there was no call, so he took his time and picked out Vilhena, who was always going to be one of the danger men.
From about 12 yards out, he made no mistake slotting home.
Jose won’t be happy about the (lack of an) offside call though.
United may have struggled in an attacking sense, but Schneiderlin as been quietly authoritative in the middle of the park in his first start under Mourinho, tidying up play and forcing Feyenoord to try and go around the outside instead of trough the middle.
Depay takes a speculative half volley from distance but it’s miles over
With 15 minutes to go, it’s time for United to be a bit braver and take the fight to the hosts...
Feyenoord change: Basacikoglu on for Berghuis
Steven Berghuis makes way for Bilal Basacikoglu as the hosts make a change.
Feyenoord have just found something of a second wind and the new man is immediately involved.
Rojo makes a hash of a clearance letting him cut inside and he tries to find the bottom corner from distance but his shot flashes wide. De Gea has it covered anyway.
Van der Heijden better be careful, he’s just gone in hard on Young and he must be on his last warning at this point, having picked up a card in the first half.
United have a free-kick but it comes to nothing.

Ibra immediately adds some bite
Immediately Ibrahimovic looks dangerous, giving them a target man that was lacking in the first 60 minutes.
As a ball comes into the box, he races to meet it, but just goes into the back of Botteghin to concede a free-kick.
That’s the hunger and determination that was lacking from United’s first-half performance though.
Substitutions: Zlatan, Memphis and Young on for Man Utd
So it’s a triple swoop with Rashford, Martial and Mata making way for Ibrahimovic, Memphis and Young.
The three departing players will all be disappointed that they couldn’t make more of an impact on te game.
No doubt, Zlatan will demand more support than was given to the young Rashford.
He’s immediately involved, rolling away from van der Heijden and feeding Young out wide.
El Ahmadi comes forward with the ball, e’s been a real live wire. But then the move breaks down and e catches Mata to concede possession.
It looks like some changes coming up for Manchester United, with Mourinho contemplating a triple change.
Zlatan is stripped off and ready to make is intro. Apparently the last time he played in this competition was 15 years ago, when he was a fresh-faced 20-year-old learning his trade at Ajax.
Safe to say that time won’t have improved the Feyenoord fans’ opinions of the big Swede.
This is about as exciting as things have got so far...
Reeealllly slow start to the second half
Looks like we’re picking things up where we left off in the first half.
It doesn’t help that United seem more than happy to drop off whenever Feyenoord have the ball and the Dutch side don’t really have the quality to carve them open.
A slight rejig for United in attack
Kuyt has started in a wider position on the right this second half, looking to test Rojo, but the Argentine stands his ground and comes away with the ball.
Another player who has been very impressive for the hosts is el Ahmadi.
The No.6 completed 97% of his passes in the first half and nearly all of his tackles.

It’s worth noting that Zlatan was out warming up with purpose during the interval.
Surely it won’t be long until we see the big Swede if things don’t improve soon.

Rashford working hard but struggling up top by himself
Marcus Rashford has given it his all so far, but it’s just not working for the youngster right now, who has struggled to hold onto the ball and bring his team-mates into the proceedings.
A few times, he’s cut an isolated figure up front by himself, with the likes of Martial, Mata and Pogba failing to lend enough support.

Jose Mourinho will be concerned at the break that his side have yet to really test the Feyenoord defence.
The hosts have controlled the ball for the most part and the chance of the first half fell to Toornstra, who screwed his shot high and wide after finding himself unmarked in the penalty area.
For United, Martial has come closest, his effort from the outside of the box failing to hit the target.
Feyenoord have been snapping into challenges and failing to let Man Utd settle into any sort of attacking rhythm.
Mourinho’s men must do better after the break if they wish to start their Europa League campaign with a win.

A cross from Darmian is well won by Rashford, whose header is inches too high for Mata, who was through on goal.
Much better from the United youngster.
And that’s the last action of note in the first half as the referee blows time on the first 45 minutes...
Feyenoord are winning the battle for control
Again, Feyenoord find some joy down the left, Manchester United are playing so narrow that they’re having free reign on the wings.
Kongolo is seeing plenty of the ball in advanced areas as Feyenoord play keep ball, working it from one side of the pitch to the other.
But eventually, Berghuis is caught offside and United can catch their breath as we approach the interval.
Ooh! Chance for Feyenoord
Kongolo sells Darmian the dummy to find some space down the left-hand flank.
He picks out Toornstra with a delicious squared ball across the edge of the penalty area.
The Feyenoord man was completely unmarked.
But he can’t keep his effort down and fires high and wide.
That was a real chance though.
With ten minutes to go until the break and Toornstra standing over a second corner in quick succession for Feyenoord, Mourinho is just urging his men to calm down, sensing that the hosts are building a head of steam here.
The corner comes swinging in, but its put behind by Smalling, who hasn’t put a foot wrong yet.
The England man clears the following corner again and United can clear their lines, but Feyenoord quickly win back possession. They’ve been quite dominant in the middle of the field.
The pace has just dropped slightly again, but here comes Martial injecting a little bit of urgency down te left flank.
However, he loses the ball and here come Feyenoord, with Kuyt finding Jorgensen, who is unable to put in a cross.
Neither side is unable to find any space in the final third as of yet.
