Mourinho vows to bring winning football

Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho answers questions from the media

Jose Mourinho last night promised to deliver winning football - but admitted he cannot guarantee to play with style, writes Mirror Football's John Cross.
Mourinho even suggested that Manchester United’s philosophy to win with elan was something of a myth and insisted that even Sir Alex Ferguson put results before entertainment.

United boss Mourinho has a reputation for being a pragmatist but there was nothing dull about his eve-of-the-season press conference as he aimed thinly-veiled attacks on his predecessors David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal as well as old rival Arsene Wenger.
“I grew up in football as a manager since 2001 more or less and specially when I came to England in 2004, I saw Man United as a winning team, not as always an attacking team,” said Mourinho.

“I played sometimes against Man United and Man United was a defensive team. When it was Real Madrid-Manchester United at Madrid they crossed the midfield line twice and Wayne Rooney played outside left to defend my right back.
“I saw them always as a winning team with an attacking philosophy, but a winning team and the winning team needs to score more goals than they concede.
“And that’s the challenge for Man United - to try to be a winning team in a new era of the Premier League that is much more difficult than before so our job is really difficult.
“But we want to win matches, we want to win competitions and to win isolated matches you can play bad but to win competitions you need to play well. That’s what we want.”
