Argentine side Newell’s Old Boys have once again been talking up their chances of taking Lionel Messi back to his hometown club - after the 2018 World Cup.
Messi, a boyhood Newell’s fan, left the club as a 13-year-old to join Barcelona.
His contract in Catalunya expires in 2018, but Los Cules are keen on extending until 2022.
However, the Argentine side’s vice-president Cristian D’Amico believes his side can make a splash on the world stage, by luring the 5-time Ballon d’Or winner back to Argentina in two years time.
“I am convinced, like many of my peers, we can make history as a club if we get the best player in the world.
“Imagine a game with Messi in the stadium, with the press around the world, the sponsors who would come - That would make the difference and economically, not just in terms of sentiment, could make a big difference to clean up the club’s debts.
“I think we’re going to have the pleasure of seeing Messi wearing the red and black.”
