Blaise Matuidi has been told that he can leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer amid interest from Manchester United.
The French midfielder is also believed to be wanted by Chelsea and Juventus, who are both monitoring his situation, report the Manchester Evening News.
Matuidi has two years to run on his current deal at the Parc des Princes, but he is understood to have told his agent that he would like to experience football outside of France.
He would cost in the region of £30million.
Jose Mourinho is believed to have identified Matuidi as a potential backup plan, should a move for Paul Pogba fail to materialise.
