Yemi Alade VS Seyi Shay Who rules 2015?
played a prominent role as a good number of sexy and talented acts made their marks. From Tiwa Savage to Omawumi, from Waje and Chidinma to Cynthia Morgan, Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay to mention a few, the average life span of a hit was three months. However, as a follow up to last week’s Showdown, this week’s edition features two hot female acts, Seyi Shay and Yemi Alade as Nigerian music pundits determine which of the pair will rule 2015.
YEMI ALADE:
Jonny crooner and Effyzzle Music sign-on, Yemi Eberechi Alade aka Yemi Alade, is an indigene of Abia State. An award-winning Afro pop and R & B songwriter, actress and entertainer, Yemi became a household name after winning the maiden edition of Peak Talent Show in 2009. A graduate of Geography from the University of Lagos, her debut single was entitled Fimisile. To date, Yemi has shared the stage with many local and international acts including Mary J. Blige, MI, Waje, Wizkid and Shina Peters. The leader of the now defunct all girl-group, Noty Girls, a few weeks after the release of the video of Jonny, attracted over 800, 000 views on YouTube. Her latest album is entitled Tangerine. To date Yemi has received
SEYI SHAY:
Debora Oluwaseyi Joshua aka Seyi Shay was born and bred in London, England. She started performing at the age of six and joined the London Community Gospel Choir. She studied music and later studied Business Management at the University of East London. Her mother had wanted her to become either a medical doctor or a lawyer but Seyi stuck to her guns. However, before she died, her mum blessed the singer and urged her to focus on her career and always put God first. A native of Ife, Ondo State, Seyi is a singer, songwriter, performer and record producer. She was opportune to tour with Beyonce and P-Diddy in the United Kingdom. In 2005, she formed an all-girl-band called Boadicea but later pulled out of the band and emerged lead vocalist of From Above UK. Returning to Nigeria, her career took a blossoming turn and in 2013, she became an Etisalat brand Ambassador. Some of her singles are Irawo, Ragga Ragga, Chairman and Murder, featuring Patoranking. She won the 2013 CityPeople Entertainment Awards for Best Musician of The Year (Female).
It’s Seyi Shay – Best Chilue, undergraduate
I prefer Seyi Shay to Yemi Alade and as far as I am concerned, she did well in 2014. And as for who will rule 2015, I am expressing my views on the party that will likely rule 2015 for two reasons. One is that I am part of the family even though I am not based here. And the other reason is that creative work is not usually predictable. You do not know what each of them is working on at the moment and which will make a hit or not. I just heard about Patoranking a couple of months back and I heard he has been around for a while but God chose this year as his year of explosion. That can also happen to any artiste any time including Seyi and Yemi.
It is Yemi Alade – Ebere Chukwuani, stylist
The crown goes to my namesake, Yemi Eberechi Alade. But I have to point out that I am not giving it to her just because she is my namesake but because she deserves it. She is a rare gem and is versatile. When you look at the songs she has dropped, the number of collabos she has done and the volume of work we hear she has her hands on, nobody should be surprised when the sexy singer begins to dominate 2015.
Showdown got it all wrong but… – Kunle Ajayi, computer engineer
In as much as I recognise Yemi Alade and Seyi Shay as blossoming stars to watch out for in 2015, I do not agree that any of them should be considered for this crown. What becomes of the likes of Tiwa Savage, Omawumi, Waje and Chidinma? I am sorry to note that Showdown got it wrong this time. However if you are considering the new female generation, then the pair have really shown signs that they will be dazzling in 2015.
Seyi Shay has better chances – Geshimi Tina, designer
I think that Seyi Shay stands a better chance of ruling 2015. I find her more talented than Yemi Alade even though Jonny made waves. Just watch out for her in the coming year; she is my favourite.
Yemi will rule with Jonny – Adebayo Abraham – freight worker
With Jonny and other forthcoming works, Yemi will surely rule 2015. She has already given the signal with her present form. And the way she is going, Tiwa Savage, Omawumi and the rest should better brace up! Seyi Shay is also a very talented act but she is not Yemi’s match, at least, for the moment.
Don’t over-promote them – Queen Adigwe, student
I can accept the fact that Seyi and Yemi are hardworking artistes but I am definitely against seeing any of them as ruling 2015. I think that you people are over-rating and over-promoting the pair and that is neither good for their careers nor the Nigerian music industry. If such high rating gets into their heads, it could affect their careers. My advice is that Showdown should desist from over-celebrating up-and-coming artistes in order to save their careers.
Vague subject – Onyi Azuka, entrepreneur
Your subject for this week is vague. You shouldn’t have generalised because you and I know that there are a number of better acts in the industry. Something tells me that you are referring to fast-rising artistes. But in any case, Yemi and Seyi are currently doing Nigeria proud through their God-given talents. I just pray that they remain focused and hardworking.
Jonny is my number one must-play-track – Festus Akanbi, banker
I just like Yemi Alade for her creativity. Jonny is one of my most favourite songs at the moment; in fact, it is my daily must-play. I don’t know much about Seyi Shay but from the little information I have, she is not Yemi’s match at all. Jonny is both interesting and instructive and that is what we expect our artistes to be doing.
They are at par but… – Moses Udoji, businessman
I prefer Seyi Shay to Yemi Alade but I like Yemi’s Jonny. So my preference for Seyi is not really because she is a better singer but because I find her sexier than Yemi. However, if I should judge from their works, I think they are at the same level.
Give it to Yemi Alade – Nicole Maduabuchi, undergraduate
It is a clear fact that Yemi Alade is more creative and more talented than Seyi Shay. While Seyi is struggling to make impact, Yemi is there already so I give it to Yemi Alade.
It’s Seyi Shay – Sandra Odita, undergraduate
If you know when Seyi Shay started and the people she has worked with, you wouldn’t have paired her with Yemi Alade. Seyi has worked with Beyonce and toured England with her. Apart from that, she is more versatile on the job than Yemi. Apart from being a recording artiste, she is also a songwriter and record producer. For instance, not many people are aware that in 2005, Seyi wrote and produced three soundtracks for popular Konami’s video game, Crime Life: Gang Wars. She also formed a musical group while in England. So, definitely, Seyi has quite an intimidating profile but because she is not a loud person, not many people really know much about her rich profile.
Leave them alone – Ademola Oyekan, entrepreneur
Why don’t you people leave these hardworking artistes alone? In fact, whether they are struggling or blossoming, they should not be distracted. What The Sun is doing through Showdown is capable of making or marring their careers. I am afraid because Showdown is becoming popular among artistes and if it is not well managed, some of them may use their money or contacts to influence the column in future.
They both deserve the crown – Dennis Ekah
Yemi and Seyi are great talents and they are both good for the crown; they both deserve it.
